Chainguard is replacing busybox with dash in Calico images
| Announcement date | Planned Change date |
| 2026-03-24 | 2026-03-26 |
What is changing?
The busybox binary and links will be removed from the calico-node and calico-pod2daemon-flexvol images.
Busybox will be replaced with the dash shell and a smaller subset of shell commands.
“Dev” versions of the images will still contain busybox.
Why is Chainguard making this change?
This aligns better with upstream Calico images and removes extra unnecessary functionality from the image.
How will this affect me?
The change is not expected to affect most customers. If you are using one of the Calico images for other shell functions than a normal deployment requires (such as initContainers or other alterations to startup scripts, etc.), you may need to add busybox.
What do I need to do?
If you do need extra shell commands provided by busybox, you can use Custom Assembly or ask the support team to add busybox to your own version of the image.
