We want to keep you informed about an upcoming change to the istio-operator and istio-operator-fips images from Chainguard. These images reached end-of-life on April 16, 2025, and are being withdrawn from our catalog.
Once withdrawn, they will remain in your synchronized registry, but will not be available in the Chainguard public catalog.
Istio deprecated the in-cluster operator in v1.23 and removed it as a supported method to manage Istio clusters in v1.24. Though no upstream changes for this operator have occurred since removal, Chainguard has been periodically refreshing v1.23 tags as other packages in these images continue to receive updates. The last refresh occurred on October 15, 2025. There are no additional updates planned for these images.
Recommended options for migrating away from the in-cluster operator are described in the upstream deprecation notice:
https://istio.io/latest/blog/2024/in-cluster-operator-deprecation-announcement/
Please note, this change only applies to istio-operator[-fips]. All other Istio images continue to follow their upstream release/support process, including:
- istio-install-cni[-fips]
- istio-pilot[-fips]
- istio-proxy[-fips]
We appreciate your understanding. If you need immediate help, reach out through our support portal at support.chainguard.dev.
