Currently, the upstream ArgoCD project ships a single image (quay.io/argoproj/argocd:v3.0.0)and this is the only image used when installing ArgoCD per the official documentation.
Chainguard, by contrast, has historically offered two images (Argocd and argocd-repo-server), which has created confusion around usage. To better align with upstream practices and simplify user experience, we will be consolidating and customers should exclusively use the argocd and argocd-fips image respectfully.
Announcement date: 14th July 2025
Planned Change date: 15th September 2025
Consolidation of argocd images
What is changing?
Effective September 15, 2025, Chainguard will remove the images argocd-repo-server & argocd-repo-server-fips respectfully from our catalog. Moving forward, customers should use the argocd and argocd-fips image exclusively.
This change aligns with the upstream ArgoCD project, which only publishes a single image:
quay.io/argoproj/argocd:v3.0.0
Why is Chainguard making this change?
The upstream project does not provide a repo-server image — it only ships the unified argocd image.
To remain consistent with the upstream argocd project, Chainguard is deprecating the additional repo-server image.
Consolidating to a single argocd and argocd-fips image eliminates confusion, and simplifies adoption and support.
How will this affect me?
If your deployments currently use the argocd-repo-server or argocd-repo-server-fips image, you will be impacted. This image will be deprecated and removed from our catalog.
What do I need to do?
Please update your configurations to replace all references to argocd-repo-server or argocd-repo-server-fips respectfully with the unified argocd image before September 1st, 2025. The argocd and argocd-fips image is a drop-in replacement for argocd-repo-server and argocd-repo-server-fips respectfully, and would have no impact on your applications.
